Behavioral
1. Tell me about when you quickly changed your approach due to factors beyond your control.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question seeks to reveal how easily you adapt to change and how you handle working under stress. Whether you thrive in such circumstances or struggle is what they are hoping to find out.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Provide an example where you exhibited flexibility, thinking quickly on your feet, and turned a negative into a positive. Leading with positivity and a "can do" attitude is the aim here. A keyword in this question is "quickly." So when determining the example you wish to share, make sure it is one that highlights working well under pressure in a fast-paced high-stress situation, and how you overcame the challenges the situation in your example presented.

What You Need to Know
Some might experience task paralysis when things don't go according to plan. They might throw up their hands and surrender to failure. While others might swiftly spring into action to overcome such obstacles, steering them towards an advantage. Exhibiting flexibility and a "can-do" attitude is the aim here. As they state on their website, they are looking for the "best people" with a "can-do" mentality.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I developed a strategy for how I was going to approach my thesis. I was in the middle of composing an outline and structure, interviewing several individuals, and doing a lot of writing. But then there was a family emergency, which required me to go out of town. I was unable to continue my interviews and composition. I also didn't want to lose momentum, so I switched gears to compiling research materials that were more conducive to working remotely in a very distracting environment and still making progress with the work that needed to be done. Life is a constant flexibility test."

2. Tell me about being confronted with a problem your creativity was required to solve.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Innovation is integral to their leadership. They're seeking to measure your preferred working style and whether it meets their required criteria. They want to know how resourceful you are and whether you exhibit 'outside-of-the-box thinking.'
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
You want your answer to exhibit determination. Frame yourself as resourceful, with a propensity to think fast on your feet. Demonstrate that you aren't easily discouraged. Where there is a will, there is a way, which is the attitude you want to convey. Meeting deadlines, overperforming, learning, and innovating is the aim of the messaging in your example.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What NOT to Say
Being unique in your example can exemplify you as an attractive prospective employee. Offering trivial or commonplace problems you'd see in an everyday setting will paint you in average light. They are aiming to recruit "the best people," not the everyday average worker.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I was part of a team responsible for building the different bots for a platform. We divided our team into three sections. Two for monitoring and security, two for flagging spam, and two for testing our security. Somehow, things got off track with the team. It turned into a not-so-friendly competition to see who could out-perform each other's work, hurting the group's productivity, and losing sight of the intention of the project. It also created some strain and friction between certain individuals on the team. I pointed this out and influenced everyone to work together on developing each set of bots in stages. I encouraged each member of the team to rotate working side by side together. This way, everyone got to work closely with everyone on an individual level. This fostered our teamwork mentality, and created a situation where we over-performed as a group, turning our project around."

Behavioral
3. Provide a recent example of a significant challenge you dealt with and how you overcame it.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
They're looking for insights into your approach when confronting such situations. They're curious what you'd deem a significant challenge, and how you approach such challenges. How you answer this question will help them determine what you have to contribute to Accenture.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
On their website, they state they are looking for a "motivated apprentice" in their interns. With the accent on 'motivation,' the key here is to present such challenges as motivating circumstances.
While some might suffer from task paralysis, feeling overwhelmed by significant challenges, others shift into high gear, motivated to overcome obstacles. 'Motivated apprentices.' Consider this when framing your example.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What to Avoid
You want to avoid returning to the same example you provided to similar questions in the same set. Returning to a single example and exploring it deeper, or paraphrasing the same messaging will only serve to attest to your lack of experience. Delivering consistent messaging across a range of examples that fit the uniqueness of these similar questions will attest to consistency in your work ethic, and a broader range of leadership experience.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"My professor challenged our class to complete an equation one other student ever solved. They said that we couldn't ask for outside help, and would be restricted to library resources. I asked what the name of the student was who solved this riddle. They told me their name and that the student attended the college back in the 1950s. So I combed through every relevant library book from that time period and looked for their name on the book card in each book. I found three textbooks and read through each. Several passages had underlined passages and notes that seemed quite old. Following those breadcrumbs, I reached the same conclusions. My professor asked how I solved the equation and I told them how. They debated for some time whether this constituted outside help. In the end, they decided that there was no way to determine if the student from the 1950s had written the notes, or if someone else had, and they followed the same clues I had and reached the same conclusion via the same method. They gave me extra credit points. I took my final anyway and got a perfect score."

4. Describe when you worked with someone that increased your awareness of personal and cultural differences?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
What they'll be looking for is less of what example you'll answer with, and more so how you answer. A person who doesn't feel comfortable when immersed in a culturally diverse environment might have difficulty navigating this question. They might stammer, and struggle to find the right words. Whereas, a person who has experience with, and no difficulty being immersed in a culturally rich environment working with people from all walks of life, will have no trouble navigating this question with ease.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Familiarize yourself with Accenture's taglines and key phrases surrounding 'inclusiveness' and 'diversity', and try to organically weave those key terms into your answer. Speak sincerely about your open-mindedness, and being a universally inclusive person. The subtlety of this question is in "increasing your awareness." This is the focal point, not on educating you on or bringing personal and cultural differences to your attention.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
Accenture states, in order to fit into their work culture, "You must exemplify Accenture's attitude to inclusion and diversity, valuing diversity and encouraging an open, trusting and inclusive environment." Diversity is a repeated component of Accenture's culture. So this question gauges your level of comfort in working with others from backgrounds different than your own. How confidently you answer this question will assist them in evaluating how well you'd fit into the culture of their brand.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I worked with someone who came from a different cultural background than my own. I knew little about their culture and society and was amazed by what they endured. I had a vague idea, but not to the extent they shared. Afterward, I kind of saw that person as a hero. The hurdles they had to overcome, and the sheer determination to beat the odds stacked against them. Despite what they endured, they consider themselves the luckiest person alive. That's an achievement. That's greatness and it humbles you."

Behavioral
5. Describe a time when you wished you'd been more collaborative with others at work.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to ascertain what value you place on team collaboration in the workplace. They're trying to determine how well fitted you are for this opportunity, and whether team collaboration is in your makeup or if it is something you struggle with presently, or in the past.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
In your example, detail the stakes and potential gains of the situation presented. Next, break down what you learned from that experience. Examine what led you to wish you could get a do-over and how you'd do things differently, knowing now what you know. "The spirit of the staircase" comes from a French phrase, "l'esprit d'escalier," which is when you thought of the perfect response for something you could have said after it's too late to say it.

What You Need to Know
Accenture places a lot of emphasis on the networking opportunities they'll provide, as well as the benefits of such a professional network. As they state in the branding, "Live & Experience the Accenture culture, build your professional network, and join communities where you can exchange ideas, experiences, and perspectives." These are important key terms to consider when aligning your values with theirs.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"There was a benefit auction at work. There were a lot of promotional materials and an art exhibit as well. I was the only one who didn't participate in this effort, but I was working on my thesis at the same time. I had to prioritize my goals, but really regretted missing out on that collaborative effort. Everyone repeatedly expressed how they wished I was there. I do too. I feel as if I would have learned a lot from it. It was a difficult choice, but my thesis took priority. I know there will be more opportunities like it in the future."

Behavioral
6. Describe something you did to ensure you earned the trust of those you worked with.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Integrity is one of their core values which they define as, "To establish trust, you must display high ethical standards, be honest, and take responsibility for your actions." What they are asking here is how you've gone about earning credibility in the workplace.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
It's common for people who are honest to naively assume everyone is honest like them. This is no different from when someone who is dishonest or untrustworthy assumes everyone is trying to undermine them or is disingenuous. So the aim here is to convey trust and integrity as integral to your nature and your common practise. Your answer should be relayed with ease.

What You Need to Know
A team that feels safe and respected makes for positive and productive work culture. The smoothly running inner workings of a business depend on its predictability. Therefore, part of what builds an effective and reliable team is cohesive work relations, feeling secure in their relations, and being able to trust one another.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"When I started at the coffee shop, that was my first job. I'd bought coffee from there several times and made friends with the people who worked there. As soon as I considered working there, I asked everyone there how they enjoyed working there, and when I started working there, I asked everyone to share their working knowledge with me. While doing this, I end up with a lot of repeat information but learned a lot of the tricks of the trade from many perspectives. I kept my head down, asked a lot of questions, and in the end, earned everyone's trust. I then started sharing some tricks of my own, shared the trade secrets they hadn't shared with each other, and got everyone, inadvertently on the same page."

Behavioral
7. Tell me about a time you worked closely with someone you didn't get along with.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Accenture's culture towards inspiring innovation is heavily steeped in a collaborative environment. Delving deeper into overcoming personal differences, their ideal candidate will exhibit leadership skills by readily stepping outside of their comfort zone. Furthermore, this requires enhanced communication and a "can-do" team mentality.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Most brands will recruit those who fit their mold. Soft people skills, and being able to non-defensively communicate with a wide range of personalities are traits of strong leadership. Investing the time to work with employees who take more effort to get on the same page makes for a much stronger team. This brand of team collaboration broadly enhances work relations.
Yet, providing several examples of difficult co-workers you worked with could accidentally betray your narrative. Rather than siding with your perspective of working with multiple difficult employees, they might wonder if those multiple employees were working with the one problem employee, namely you. Proceed with caution when navigating this question. Consistency is of value here. This question goes deeper than working with a challenging co-worker. Its true nature is in determining how easy you are to work with.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
There are several interview stages for the Accenture Internship program. The final interviews take place in The Accenture Assessment Centre. This is divided into three sections, group activities, a virtual reality assessment, and technical assessments and interviews. Their ideal recruit will embrace their core values, namely, "Valuing diversity by holding respect for the individual and encouraging an open, trusting and inclusive environment." They'll be trying to assess how deeply you embrace their values from their behavioral question sets to their group activities.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Because I prioritized my studies and stopped covering this co-worker's shifts, they stopped being nice to me at the coffee shop I worked at. Their attitude took on a negative tone. At first, this bad energy seemed focused on me, but then I noticed how they weren't being all that nice to anyone. That kind of negativity can be toxic, contagious. I found it challenging. I smile a lot, and sometimes it felt like a strain to keep smiling and having a good time around that kind of energy. But I kept on anyway. Sometimes they'd turn around when they realized they were the only one not having a good time. But it was certainly a challenge working closely with them at times."

8. Can you tell me about a time when you struggled to meet your own goals or objectives?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
They're looking for "the best of the best," for motivated apprentices and future collaborators towards innovation. This question aims to reveal how far you've progressed in your professional development. The example you provide should reveal where you are in your development, and whether you're ahead of the game or lagging behind. Paint a picture of who you are and it will determine whether you're a good fit for the opportunity they are offering.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Provide an example that centers on the struggle you faced, and how you overcame it, even if you didn't succeed to the degree you hoped. What is important are the gains that contributed to greater success moving forward.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What NOT to Say
Don't offer examples where you didn't succeed, didn't learn from the experience, and laid blame on external circumstances or on others. Avoid painting yourself as a victim.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"When the pandemic hit and my course load shifted to remote learning, I had to move back in with my parents, who both work out of the home. This environment proved far too distracting to devote myself appropriately to my studies. So I realized I had to get out of the house and find another place to study. So I used my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot and studied at an outdoor/indoor music venue that was covered with stadium seating but was otherwise effectively abandoned. It turned out to be a wonderful environment to work in, with no one around to distract me from my studies. I normally have no issues working around colleagues, but parents are different."

9. Tell me about a time you offered assistance and support to someone.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This interview question is commonly designed to find out how well you work with others. They're looking to get a sense of your communication skills, and your inclination towards supporting and working as part of a team.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
When considering your example, ensure it exemplifies effective communication skills. Using the STAR method, detail the situation where you identified your struggling coworker, the task required, what actions you took, and the overall result of your help. Developing or mentoring your co-workers is an excellent indicator of leadership.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
At Accenture, as with so many businesses, strong communication is integral to their daily operations. Excellent communication can streamline a business and make it more successful. Communication breakdowns can be costly. As Accenture says on their website, they're looking for individuals who "communicate effortlessly with co-workers in person or online."
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"In college, I worked at a coffee shop on campus. One day, the owner of the cafe's wife went into labor. They were finally having the baby. They called me to see if I could come in last minute to open up shop and get everything going. I was already on campus, woke up at 3 am, got dressed, and rushed down there. They had recently entrusted me with a key for this contingency. So I rose to the challenge, and supervised the staff, running a successful shift from sunup to 3 pm when we closed up shop. That was a hard day, but I couldn't complain. I was just happy for them that their baby was finally born."

10. Describe an occasion you had too many things to accomplish and you were required to prioritize other goals before your own.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question will help the interviewer determine whether you prioritize your needs above that of the team. It will help them gauge the level of your ambition, and evaluate your time management skills. Being able to determine your potential, and navigate where you are in your development, is what this question hopes to reveal.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
The strength of your answer should be in your ability to set aside your own goals and ambitions, prioritizing the need for the greater good. Prioritizing other goals over your own isn't necessarily a bad thing. It simply means you instinctually did the right thing and what the team required of you. Frame your answer through this lens.

What You Need to Know
The Accenture Internship Program advertises "real-world knowledge through hands-on experience" and being mentored by their leaders throughout the internship. It's about more than learning their systems and technology. It's about learning from your mistakes as you grow into a leadership role.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"It was time to prioritize my thesis when realized I had too many things going on. I wanted my Applications and Technology Solutions Club in college to continue on, yet my successors needed more guidance and kept reaching out. The club was struggling and their leadership was being challenged. I was also training the new assistant manager at the cafe, and they kept reaching out with lots of questions, lacking confidence in their new role. So I realized I had to put my thesis on hold to get everyone else up to speed. I wanted to move fast, so I spent the next week developing training guides for both the cafe and the club. I oriented both groups with their prospective guides as resources and got everyone up to speed."

11. Tell me about a time you achieved success as a result of the contacts in your personal network?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer is curious how resourceful you are, and what resources you tap into to achieve success. They're also curious about what value your place on professional relationships, how you maintain them, and your propensity for networking.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Striving towards a broader scope and big picture lens is the goal here. Highlight the value you place on networking and expanding your professional resources. Take time to consider how you define success. The example you share should exhibit your individual success equated to the success of the team.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
Accenture Internship Program advertises that "Interns work with experienced professionals, which gives them opportunities to network. While these are minor roles, an intern gains valuable work experience that significantly increases the prospects of their future career success. Experience the Accenture culture, build your professional network, and join communities where you can exchange ideas, experiences, and perspectives." Consider these points when considering how you'll align your answer.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"In college, I was working on a team that was developing an algorithm for a project, but there was a hurdle we were having trouble navigating. Then I remembered this mentor I met at one of my science fairs in high school who worked at Google. So I called her and she worked with us for about ten minutes when she realized the problem. The answer was right under our nose, so she asked us several guiding questions, leading us along the right line of questions that delivered us to the answer we were looking for."

Behavioral
12. Tell me about when you were asked to change your work method or your approach?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
They are interested in how flexible you are, and whether you adapt to, or struggle with change. On one extreme, a person with a "can-do" attitude might take any suggestions in stride, always motivated to do a better job. On the other extreme, a person might grow defensive and take such suggestions personally, or as a sign of not meeting expectations. The interviewer is interested in where you fall between these extremes.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
In your example, focus on the intentions behind your approach. Demonstrate that were you hoping for gains for the greater good. Breakdown what precipitated the feedback, or the requested course correction, and how you took it in stride. Describe the benefits gained from the course correction, what you learned, how it aided in your development, and how you've grown from there.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
Part of growing in a leadership role is in keeping the bigger picture of one's development in focus. It's the difference between an inflexible ridged mentality and being an eager learner who's able to adapt to change.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"When I was training as assistant manager, I was told how to handle an employee who was underperforming. The exiting assistant manager coached me on how to approach this employee as they would. I emulated them, but the employee took offense to my approach. The owner later asked what went wrong. I explained things from my point of view and the owner said I shouldn't have delivered the feedback as instructed. They said that approach worked well for my predecessor but wasn't in accordance with my leadership style. The owner then coached me on how to deliver the same feedback, using my own words and perspective. The next time I met with the employee, I took responsibility and asked if we could try again. This time, things went well, and our relations improved."

Behavioral
13. Tell me about when you used sound judgment and logic to overcome a challenge.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
They are looking for insights into your work style, and how it may complement the Accenture environment. They're also curious about what sound judgment and logic look like from your perspective. Frequently performing in an interview is akin to performing in a dance. You have to know all the moves and move with grace.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
When providing your example, take liberties in walking the walk and talking the talk. The goal is to exemplify an ability to exhibit sound judgment, and that logic is your default reaction to challenges. Exuding confidence in your own abilities, and touching on the personal philosophy of your approach can go a long way.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Stay Away From
Avoid answering this question literally. Sound judgment and logic are the bare minimum. Offering a simple example where you used logic and sound judgment, without delving deeper into what this question has to offer, will only speak to your inexperience. Challenges come with the territory.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I was working as part of a team on an assignment to streamline a bogged down algorithm. Several members of my team grew confident they could develop a new algorithm that would outperform the original. As they proceeded, they kept running into glitches. Before we knew it, there were so many roundabout fixes we had a spaghetti algorithm on our hands. In the end, what they created was still underperforming. So, instead of joining them in resigning to defeat, I rebooted the project by returning to the original algorithm and writing another simple algorithm that rerouted the beefier information bogging it down into something of an information buffer, while the original algorithm was processing the smaller files. This outperformed the original model and we just barely met our deadline."

Behavioral
14. Give me an example of when you proactively sought feedback.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer is interested in learning more about your approach to your work. They're curious if you frequently seek feedback, or you wait for others to come to you. Doing the basics of your job and assuming that no news is good news isn't necessarily a sign of leadership but a red flag of putting in the bare minimum. Your interviewer wants to know where you stand in this regard.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
The term "you're in charge of your own development" rings true here. The appropriate answer to this question isn't in providing a single example where you proactively sought feedback, but in how frequently do you do so. "Always ask questions" is solid leadership advice in this context. This is the moniker of a person whose norm is striving to go above and beyond.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
"Gain real-world knowledge through hands-on experience and be inspired by Accenture leaders as they mentor you throughout your internship." How proactively you grow in your roles offers insights into whether you'll actively take advantage of the opportunities the Accenture Internship program offers.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Whenever I am learning something new, I always seek feedback. I have always been wary of presumption and rework. I find rework discouraging, and I pride myself on enjoying my work and having a positive outlook. So I try to balance proactively seeking feedback and being self-sufficient. I don't just limit external input to one person either. Everyone has something different to offer, so the more resources I can tap into, the better my work will be. I guess I've always chomped at the bit, per se. The sooner I can get versed in something, the sooner I can overachieve."
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Behavioral
15. Tell me about when you took advantage of an opportunity to learn a new skill.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer is hoping to learn more about your approach towards your own leadership development. One's level of ambition can be revealed in how frequently they take advantage of learning new skills. It may also serve to reveal if you are overly ambitious and frequently take on too many tasks. Whether you're more likely to underperform on many tasks, over-perform on one task, or fall somewhere in between is what they're after here.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Taking on too many tasks, and trying to overachieve without having a firm grasp on time management, can result in poor work quality, thereby not meeting expectations. Being a perfectionist, and focusing too long on performing one task, may result in not meeting deadlines and slowing a team's productivity. They're trying to determine where you come in on this scale. The aim here is to strike a balance of quality and quantity.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
Accenture's Internship Program promises plenty of opportunities to learn new skills. This opportunity offers "real-world knowledge through hands-on experience" and being "inspired by Accenture leaders as they mentor you throughout your internship." If you are not the type of person who takes advantage of every opportunity that presents itself, then you might not be a great fit for the program.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I recently took an online four-week course at Wharton of the University of Pennsylvania and earned their Leadership & Management Certificate. It cost a bit of money but was only four hours per week and I learned a lot."

Behavioral
16. Tell me about some self-development you've undertaken in the last six months.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer is curious how proactive you are in your own development, how eager you are to learn and grow, and what you'd offer Accenture in this role. Questions like these aid in determining the value of a candidate as a future investment for a company or organization.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Whether you actively attend lectures, avidly consume every periodical in your field, or read books on leadership skills, this is an opportunity to advertise how you've taken charge of your career. Exhibit your ambition through relaying the actions you've taken outside of work and school to grow in ways that would benefit your career.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What NOT to Say
Your interviewer isn't interested in the personal breakthroughs you've made with your therapist, or other personal information surrounding your self-growth. Be filtered. Keep your answer limited to your professional development.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Over the last few months, I've been reading a lot of books and blogs on developing strong leadership skills. There's a lot of advice out there that allows for one to pick and choose which information and approaches work best. What I didn't expect was how these lessons would affect my personal life. The communication skills I've learned have improved my personal relationships and the time-management skills I've picked up have increased my productivity tenfold."

Behavioral
17. Tell me about a time you overcommitted yourself, or your organization, to a customer?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
They are curious if you took responsibility for your own actions, and how you navigated this situation. This will inform them about how you'd fit into their work culture and if you could be trusted with their clients.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Detail how the situation unfolded, be careful not to choose a circumstance where you committed untrustworthy or poor judgment. Describe what you did to cope with the stress of the situation, how you proceeded, what you prioritized, and whether you recruited help in trying to deliver on your promises. Then move towards how it resolved, what you delivered, whether items were delayed or if you asked for a deadline extension, and what perks you offered for the inconvenience. Focus on the client's takeaway, and how you made it right. Avoid examples where you canceled on the client or where the result did not satisfy expectations. You want to come across as an asset, not a liability.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What You Need to Know
Accenture considers itself a 'client partner,' and a core value of theirs is "Integrity - Emphasising a commitment to ethical and honest behavior, and taking responsibility for its actions." It's not necessarily an egregious error to over-commit to a client. However, being able to live up to your promises comes down to integrity. When you're unable to meet your commitments, how you handle it is the character test in question.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"At the cafe, I had a customer call in a big order for the following morning. I called the owner of the cafe to inform them of what to expect the next morning, but our manager informed me that would clear out our display counter and leave nothing for our customers for the rest of our day. They said as things stood, we could not fulfill the order. They recommended I call the client back and inform them there was no way we could fulfill the order. But as I prepared to call the customer back, I felt like it was my integrity that was on the line. So I determined I had no choice but to work overtime and get to baking. So I called the owner and told them what I thought was the right thing to do, and they split the difference with me. They said if I handled making the dough and all the prep work, they'd handle baking it all the next morning. So I spent the next four hours preparing the order. Before that point, I didn't have strong time management skills. But boy oh boy, did I learn fast."

18. Describe when you tried an untested approach to handling a problem.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question seeks to offer insights into one's makeup and determine if you are a good fit for this role while revealing any potential red flags. Innovation is partly achieved by taking calculated risks. For some, taking risks comes naturally. Others might take risks compulsively, which could turn costly for an individual, a family, or a company. Then there are those who are risk-averse, maintaining the status quo.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Detail the situation, what inspired you to take the approach you took, and how you achieved a positive outcome. When delivering your example, you want to present yourself as someone who takes calculated risks as opposed to someone who is a habitual risk-taker.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What to Avoid
Avoid providing examples where you went outside of the chain of command, or the approach you took resulted in failure. This will only serve as a red flag, presenting you as a liability.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I wanted to take a course from a professor I admired, but the class was full. So I read through all the books the professor had written, and approached them, asking them questions about their work. They saw through what I was doing and said they admired my effort and tenacity. They challenged me to read through some very heavy reading material and said they'd test me on what I learned by week's end. I accepted the challenge. There was too much material to cover without causing my other studies to suffer. So I approached the reading material in a manner that would benefit my current studies. If I finished early enough, I'd read on. I didn't get through all the material. At the end of the week, I thanked them for the opportunity. They asked me how much material I covered and I told them. They asked me why I approached the workload as I did, and I explained. They were impressed and said the true test was my approach to my work, and I was accepted into the class."

19. Think about a problem you tried to solve but couldn't.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to know how you deal with defeat, and wants to gauge your ability to take responsibility for your own actions. They're looking for someone who analytically examines their setbacks and learns from their failures so as not to repeat them. Using such lessons to develop and implement systems towards streamlining work and ensuring repeated success are attractive traits in a leader. A red flag would be someone who deflects blame, attributing such failures to others or to circumstances beyond their control, representing no lessons learned. Such behavior is more likely to repeat mistakes, resulting in repeated costly setbacks.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
With the example you offer, turn your failures into success. Focus on the positives. If you grew from the experience and had positive takeaways, such as analytically examining what went wrong, and learning what you can do next time to succeed, then the glass is half full of silver linings. Attitude is everything.

"I was spearheading two separate projects, and took on a third, convinced I could deliver all three of them on time. This third project was very involved, more so than I expected, and it slowed me down. The deadline approached, the first two projects were close to being done, but the third was only halfway there. I realized I was going to either miss all three deadlines, or just one if I abandoned the third project and reprioritized the first two. So I passed off the third project. I thought I could do anything. But I realized it was better to do a few things well, as opposed to more at a lower quality of work. Since then, I'm conscientious in striking a balance between over-performing versus biting off more than I can chew. It's important for one to know their own limits."

Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Accenture's program seeks to groom leadership from within. With offices spread across the globe, it's likely you'll have to relocate in order to pursue the opportunities offered here. If you aren't interested in travel and express as much, it will probably show the interviewer a lack of grasping what the opportunity offers. However you choose to answer this question, it is best to answer it before you go to the interview.

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Fully grasping this holds the promise of an effective leadership style. Not comprehending its implications will reveal potential red flags. This question is designed to alert them to the depth of your understanding of this concept. As a leader, how you present the direction the company is heading can have a significant impact on how quickly they reach that destination.

What You Need to Know
A leader inspires innovation and strives to better the team. One way to define "stewardship" is to accept responsibility, strive to better communities and the environment at large. This holds the potential of offering each individual member of a team increased pride in their work, and incentivizes going above and beyond with consistency.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Before I was promoted to assistant manager, I performed my work as described, but didn't really have a concept of what performing above and beyond looked like. I worked a variety of shifts, from morning prep to opening and closing. Once I got a feel for what each shift required, I performed my work as efficiently as I could. When I closed, I stayed behind to set up those responsible for morning prep. Eventually, as I trained as assistant manager, I got a stronger feel for all the behind-the-scenes stuff, and the importance behind each aspect of the job in ways I was previously unaware of. I set up new systems for how to get everyone on the same page to overperform. The job became easier for everyone. Maybe that's not a good example. I pride myself on going above and beyond. I just wish I could have been an over performer earlier on, knowing what I knew later on."

22. Tell me about how you like to spend your spare time.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This is commonly posed as a wrap-up question. It could reveal any red flags or contradictions to your previous answers. It can also provide you with a final opportunity to sell your merits and make yourself shine.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
This is an opportunity for you to make yourself more interesting. Offering a glimpse into what makes you relatable is the goal. If all goes well, it could result in some connective conversation that will leave the interviewer with a memorable experience at the conclusion of the interview.

What NOT to Say
Avoid examples that contradict other answers you've provided. For example, if you previously explained that you keep up with the latest industry news by doing nothing but reading in your spare time, and then answer this question by telling them how you love spending every minute outside of work going to clubs and watching TV, then the interviewer will question the authenticity of your previous answers throughout the interview set.

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Answer this question according to your own nature. Evaluate what difficult decisions you've made, and why those decisions were difficult for you. Was disciplinary action required, or did you need to bow out of work for personal reasons, such as a family emergency... Whatever example you offer, outline why it was uncomfortable, how it stands outside of the norm, and the ultimate outcome.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
What to Avoid
Avoid telling the interviewer what you think they want to hear. Avoid reading into it too much, or misjudging its intentions. You should focus on your nature and your worldview. They're interested in getting to know you. They are trying to recruit the "best of the best," so exhibit the best version of you.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"A friend asked if I'd collaborate with them on their thesis. This would've detracted from the work I was putting in on my thesis. I wanted to help, but in the end, it was too much of a sacrifice. I also felt they should be managing their work on their own, and be recognized for their own merits, rather than borrowing from others. So I shared the resources they needed to do it on their own, yet they continued to solicit help instead. They didn't finish their thesis in time, which I thought was unfortunate, and they held it against me. I know we're all responsible for our own actions, but I still feel bad for them and wished I had the where-with-all to help them out. But there's only so much one person can do."

How to Answer
One's self-development should be as never-ending as one's determination. Perhaps you've heard a person can drive from coast to coast, in the dark, only seeing as far as one's headlamps allow. This analogy suggests one can surmount seemingly unachievable big dream goals into smaller, easily attainable goals.
If you haven't already, put together a couple of five-year career plans. Start with creating one starting from your college experience. Next, determine where you currently stand on your trajectory of that plan and build another five-year plan from there. Following this exercise, you should be ready to revise your five-year career plan every year, determining where you are and building again from there, so you can adjust accordingly. Doing so will aid in you your interviews.

34. Tell me about when you set a clear direction for others to follow.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Telling someone to do something, without explaining why, without defining the endgame, will result in confused messaging, resulting in a lower standard of work, and increasing rework and project costs.
Explaining to the entire team the course direction from the onset, detailing every part which each team member is responsible for, and the stakes involved brings every team member into the fold. This motivates your team by providing them with an investment in the joint success of the team effort. In the end, this provides each member with a feeling of pride in the work they'll deliver.
Setting clear goals, deadlines, and expectations for each person's part demonstrates effective leadership. It eliminates speculation and the kind of dissent which stems from a lack of trust. Therefore, clear and decisive communication is integral to effective leadership.

If you feel people often respond to your honesty, or your propensity towards embracing people from all walks of life, then integrity and diversity inclusion are two of your core values.

Answer Example
"AI was in charge of performing inventory at the coffee shop after we closed up at 3 pm. We had three hours to complete our task. I had three other co-workers who were part of my team. I created detailed and intuitive spreadsheets for the project. The three co-workers weren't that invested in their work. They were in it for the overtime. Knowing this, I wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. So before inventory, I passed out copies of this spreadsheet and explained the method I'd developed for this task. I explained how this would impact the success of the cafe, how it personally impacted the owner, and the success to maintain this business. I also broke it down to an individual level and ensured we were performing the best, most accurate count on the first round which could eliminate the potential caveat of having to do a recount. This motivated everyone to do a good job, and as a result, things moved much faster than anticipated and we finished early. Our results were well within range."

Leadership
35. Tell me about when you recently mentored a co-worker.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
There are those who strive to contribute to the vision and the greater success of a team. Then there are those who strive to develop themselves, driven by their own ambitions to accomplish their personal and professional goals. There's nothing wrong with ambitiously trying to climb the latter. But prioritizing the ultimate success of the team displays big-picture thinking. By contributing to the greater success of the company and the team, they are contributing to their individual success and development.
A person who prioritizes their own goals above others, or that of the team, can undermine their own efforts towards success. Investing in the development of your coworkers, and driving positive change towards the greater success of the team is an investment in one's own development. The scope of one's vision, big picture versus a more narrow short-term view, is what the interviewer is truly trying to assess.

How to Answer
Accenture's culture is centered around innovation, collaboration, and creating a level playing field for all their participants. Ideally, your goal is to reveal your motivation to further the team, rather than checking off a list of accomplishments as you try to climb through the ranks. Balance your personal goals with the goals of the team. When they align, both your personal goals and that of the team are accomplished.

Answer Example
"By the time I left the coffee shop, I was assistant manager. I gave the owner a heads-up that I was going to be leaving in a couple of months. They were grateful I gave them so much notice. I started training my successor at being the new assistant manager. It went well, and in less than a couple of weeks, they were up to speed. My boss assured me I'd be assistant manager until I left, but I told them it would be better if I stepped down and if my trainee became my boss. This way I could back them up, be around to answer questions, and phase out my schedule. I go in for coffee there now and again, and they're all doing great."

Answer Example
"When I delivered my thesis. I had to stand up in front of a group of people who were ultimately there to judge my work, and in effect judge me. This was the culmination of everything I'd worked towards. I was nervous. But I believed in myself, so I focused on that, and convinced myself that everyone would come around. I believed in myself and delivered my thesis with conviction. In the end, I felt like it was a success."

Leadership
37. Tell me about when others resisted changes you implemented.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Your example and how you present it will assist them in determining your fit into their company culture. This leadership question seeks to reveal your leadership style, your ability to lead, how you go about persuading others, and how you align the goals of the team. It's one thing to usher others through a resistance towards change, and it's another to micromanage others by commanding them to adapt to something they don't trust.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Rather than framing yourself as more knowledgable or experienced as those you've worked with, the path forward to answering this question is where you assisted others in adapting to positive changes you've innovated. This will exhibit yourself as a desirable asset aligned with thier approach.

What You Need to Know
As they state on their website, "Get a head start in unlocking the power of your leadership DNA. Discover your strengths as you take on challenges that will prepare you for leading the way in making a difference." Integrity, respect, and trusting team collaborations are also important aspects of their core values. If you already have leadership experience this is your chance to show it.

Answer Example
"I'd worked on a group project in developing a complicated algorithm driven by bots. There were two friends who together took command and drove the group in one direction. I had a different approach and asserted my viewpoint, but I was outnumbered and my voice wasn't heard. On the next project, I was determined to yield better results. So I worked in a team effort, but did things my own way and shared what I was doing with others. It was a different approach than everyone else was taking, but I developed an active interest from the rest of the team in what I was accomplishing. Pretty soon, everyone started asking more and more about my approach, adopting it as their own. That felt pretty good. I realized my presumption was what led me astray the first time. Now, I influence just by being me. I think that's what everyone wants, to be successful at being themselves."

Leadership
38. Tell me about a decision you recently made which supported big-picture business goals.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Those not in leadership roles form opinions and assumptions based solely on the scope of their lens. This question is geared towards ascertaining your leadership potential. A key aspect of leadership is in keeping the larger scope and long-term goals in focus even when more urgent tasks command your attention.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Whether you decided to put in overtime, work three shifts back to back to support your team in achieving their goals, or took some other route, you want to consistently exude a willingness and flexibility to go above and beyond. The decision you made could be great or small in its greatness. Supported is the keyword in this question.

Answer Example
"As an assistant manager at the cafe, we had a gift card incentive program for our staff. However, the expenses for these incentives were coming from the manager's expense account, which was exceeding our budgetary limits. I decided, even though the incentives seemed to motivate staff to overperform, they were detracting from our big-picture goals. So instead of allowing for the perks, we were distributing via gift cards, that we'd do a BBQ party at the end of the month instead of the gift cards. These incentivized our staff just as well and cost only a fraction from the manager's expense account."

39. Provide an example where you rose up to demonstrate your leadership skills.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is framed to test your leadership skills, or reluctance to lead. As there are many personality types out there, some are born to lead, and others may learn to lead. With this question, they are trying to assess where you fall on this scale.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Before choosing your example, consider how you'd present your leadership skills or talents. Contemplate what leadership looks like to you, framed by leaders you admire. Consider what "rising to the occasion" looks like. Doing so will present you as striving to be the best version of yourself that you can be while demonstrating sincere potential.

Answer Example
"I started an applications and technology solutions club in college. There wasn't a club like it, so I decided to create the club I was interested in joining. This took a lot of effort. From defining the purpose of the club, creating a constitution for it, recruiting and assessing interest, electing my club's officers, to our first meeting, and continuing spreading the word. I learned a lot from that experience. I am proud to say the club is still going today."

Situational
40. Tell me about working with a challenging co-worker and how you handled it.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is layered. Not only is the interviewer trying to get an idea of who you are, but also an idea of your communication skills, as well as your focus on a team mentality. They're keeping a keen eye out for any 'red flags.' In simplest terms, in this scenario, the last thing you want is to plant the seed that the challenging co-worker in this scenario was you.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 22nd, 2022
How to Answer
Display yourself as a team player, openly and equally accepting everyone on your team. You don't want to come across as part of the reason you and this coworker didn't get along. Avoid assigning blame. Objectify the situation, exhibiting an emotionally mature perspective, and how you navigated this terrain, ultimately leading to a successful resolution. Focus on the positives, and how the overall outcome benefitted the team.

What You Need to Know
They want to know if you embrace Accenture's attitude towards inclusion and diversity through exemplifying individual respect on all levels. They are also trying to determine whether you're a team-oriented person, and from your perception, what constitutes a "challenging co-worker." On their website, they claim that they expect their interns to have a "can-do" mentality. Having a team mentality means being a people person. Most people fall somewhere in the middle of the scale between an introvert and an extrovert. So this question is also meant to assist in evaluating where you fall on the scale. Only in the rarest of cases do some fall at one end of this extreme.

Answer Example
"At the coffee shop, I worked with someone who kept asking me to cover their shifts. After a while, I just couldn't keep helping them out. I wasn't going to allow their demands to interfere with my studies. As soon as I started politely declining, their attitude changed. I thought that was unfortunate. Not taking that kind of thing personally is a gift. I was able to go on about my day, enjoying my work, largely unaffected by their attitude towards me. Turns out, the cafe let them go leading me to believe that something happened."
