I ask this question at the end of every interview, and I appreciate candidates who do not end our time together with 'no, I think you answered everything during the interview.' This is a huge wasted opportunity!
When the interviewer asks if you have any questions, you should always have at least one. By asking a question, big or small, you are showing the interviewer that you have insight and a thoughtful character and are engaged in the process.
"Thank you for providing me with a strong understanding of the requirements for this role. I feel confident I could add value to the team at Zebra Technologies. You mentioned that I would be performing quality tests as a machine operator. Can you tell me about the process for logging and resolving defects? I am curious to know more about the basic workflow and systems used."
"I would like to know more about the software development methodology used by the team I would be assigned to in the event I am hired for the senior engineer role. I have worked on both waterfall and agile, and every team I have worked with followed a slightly different process. I know you mentioned the team follows an agile methodology, so I would be interested to know more about their iteration length, specific roles, ceremonies, etcetera."
Remember to direct questions about compensation, days off, sick days, benefits, or the like to the recruiter or HR representative. You can even send those types of questions through a follow-up email. Your time with your interviewer is valuable, and you should make the most of it. Your question should be specific and related to the work you will be doing, the team you will work with, or the customers you will serve if hired.
Also, remember that interviewers discuss the candidates they met with after each round of interviews. You may enhance your chances of impressing the group if you ask a custom question in each interview aligned with the specific material discussed in each interview.
