Many hiring managers will choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness - all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community in some form of volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

"For the past eight months, I have volunteered every Wednesday evening at our local animal shelter. I will help with grooming the animals, feeding them, and walking them. It's been an enjoyable experience and rewarding at the same time. I've met a lot of new people, learned a ton about animals, and already feel like a leader at the shelter."

I trained to become a volunteer as a Wish Granter for the MakeaWish organization. I wanted to utilize my strong communication and organizational skills to help children who suffer from cancer. After my training sessions, my elderly mother became so ill that she needed me to assist her. I made her doctor's appointments and accompanied her to them, drove her around, coordinated our travel arrangements for her medical care, and took care of my mother's personal and medical needs. I do not regret my decision to make my mother feel more comfortable by becoming her caregiver. I hope to return to volunteering with MakeaWish at some point in the future.
Marcie's Feedback
Becoming a wish granter for the MakeaWish organization is an admirable volunteer position to hold, as is becoming your mother's caregiver in her time of need. The interviewer will undoubtedly be impressed. Great job!
