United Way wants employees who are passionate and dedicated to "fight[ing] for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community." The interviewer wants to see that you are a truly mission-driven individual who supports and can eloquently verbalize the purpose of United Way programs.

Familiarize yourself with United Way's mission statement: "United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good." Highlight specific ways you have reflected this mission in previous experiences and demonstrate how it is important to you in your personal and/or professional pursuits.

"United Way invests in communities, and I strongly believe in the transformative and strengthening power of community mobilization. I used to be the director of a community center in my neighborhood, and we operated several programs for youth, adults, and seniors who lived in that area. We held classes, hosted afterschool tutoring sessions, had sports and games, and provided meals and companionship. We even had monthly neighborhood clean-up events. Seeing the community unite to get to know their neighbors and take ownership of the neighborhood inspired me. In my opinion, it was a microcosm of the work that United Way does around the world, and I would relish the opportunity to join in that work."

"From petitioning state legislatures to ban voucher systems from school districts to lobbying for more funding for city schools, I have been a passionate advocate for equity in education my entire career.
