"I have worked as a volunteer manager at the same organization for the past six years. In that time, I have recruited nearly three thousand active volunteers in partnership with universities, corporations, religious groups, and government and civic agencies. Not only do I recruit volunteers, but I also train them to represent the organization well while serving the community. I am confident in my ability to recruit large numbers of volunteers and train them to expertly and efficiently deliver United Way's services to communities in need."

"When I plan special events for my organization, I rely on hundreds of volunteers annually to execute any event we sponsor, whether it is a fundraiser, panel discussion, or service activity. I hand-pick volunteers with specific skillsets for each task. For example, I recruited a fraternity from a local college to set up and tear down the event space for our annual nonprofit fair. At that event, I utilized two volunteers with accounting experience to manage donations and be responsible for the cash box. During events, I float between stations to ensure each volunteer is comfortable and answer any questions they might have. After the event, we gather to reflect on the experience and make suggestions for improvement. As a person who coordinates volunteers, I believe it is vital to seek their feedback to strengthen the organization's events in the future."

The interviewer wants to know that you understand the unique needs and interests of volunteers. If you have volunteer coordinating experience, share what you have learned about how to recruit, train, supervise, retain and recognize volunteers.
