What does leadership mean to you?
When answering this question, it is important to gain an understanding of the type of leadership they promote and advance in their work culture. That, after all, is what an interviewer is after when asking this question. They want to know whether your style of leadership will complement theirs. So, when defining what leadership means to you, you'll first want to honestly determine how your philosphy aligns with theirs.
On their website, Best Buy says, "Leadership is not about power, fame, glory or money. Leadership is about purposeful, authentic, human service. Leadership is NOT about tradeoffs. It is about alignment of purpose, vision, and strategy. Leadership is about purposeful, authentic, human service."
They also have what they call the Five Be's of Leadership: "Be a purposeful leader. Be clear about your purpose as an individual and how it connects with the purpose of the organization. Be clear about who you serve. You are here to serve others, in particular those on the front line, not yourself or the person you work for. Be clear about your role as a leader. It is not to be smarter than anyone else. It is to create an environment in which others can be successful. Be a values-driven leader. Integrity is the cornerstone to everything. Be an authentic leader. Be yourself, your full self. Be who you are."
"For me, leadership looks like caring, encouraging, and helping those you are working with realize their full potential and capability. It is about being honest and transparent in all your communications. Leading by sharing the vision of what we are all striving for, sharing in the success, and really making it about the team and not your own career advancement or glory. It is a group effort, so success belongs to the group. Leadership is about recognizing and encouraging potential."
