In an interview, anytime a candidate is asked about a time they dealt with a setback or failed, it is less about the mistakes they made, and more about how they dealt with and recovered from that mistake. The question aims to determine what was learned from the experience, which will help determine whether the candidate is likely to grow and improve or whether they will continue to repeat the same mistake. As they say at Best Buy, "Work is not about attempting to achieve perfection, but about human connections. We believe performance and growth come from accepting and embracing our imperfections and vulnerabilities."

In your video interview, keep in mind that since your interviewer is not sitting across from you, they will be trying to fill in certain sensory gaps, and might interpret your non-verbal cues and body language to see how comfortable you are with discussing your failures. So, be mindful of how you might come across on camera. Keep it natural, speaking with friendly confidence. Be mindful of your posture and smile with both your mouth and your eyes. Keep your body language open, your tone steady, even, and consistent with your statements.

"Well, I applied for a position at Best Buy about a year ago, and I didn't get the job. I really want to work for the company, so it really did feel like a failure. But I reached out to the recruiter and asked their advice on what I could have done better. They shared it with me, and I have taken their advice, improved my skills, and now feel more ready than ever to give this another shot."
