Aldi is unique in a variety of ways! Do some research on the company website, visit a local store, and be sure to read customer and employee reviews online. Consider discussing the following aspects: they are smaller in size than traditional stores, they do not provide grocery bags, checkout lanes are minimal, a quarter is required to use a cart, they have unique stores hours to keep costs down, prices are noticeably lower than bigger stores, etc. Add your personal opinions about what makes the store and the shopping experience at Aldi unique!

"Aldi is vocal about their core value to be responsible in reducing their environmental footprint. I read that Aldi was recently ranked as the No. 1 most sustainable grocery retailer among seven of the most popular U.S. chain stores by Brightly.eco. I know the company has made great strides in creating reusable product packaging, has eliminated the use of plastic bags in stores, and has created sustainable product lines. Aldi is definitely an industry leader when it comes to sustainability."

"I know Aldi stores tend to be smaller than traditional stores like Walmart or Whole Foods. I also know Aldi is focused on simplicity to keep costs down. For example, instead of having employees go to the parking lot and bring carts in regularly, customers are asked to put a quarter in the slot in the cart, then when the customer returns it to the rack, they get their quarter back. Additionally, the company does not use plastic bags in the check-out process; rather, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags to carry their groceries out."

Good start - your answer will show that you have researched Aldi. To push your response even further, what does this all mean to you? Why do you believe these factors are important?
Anonymous Answer
Aldi has a unique reputation in the market for not only lower price points but also surprising quality. The smaller-scale stores offer a break from the sometimes-overwhelming big-box experience. The no-frills approach to shopping is paid back to the consumer. I believe people would rather enjoy more money in their wallets, good food in their homes, and an efficient shopping experience rather than a store filled with options they don't necessarily care about. Quality vs. Quantity is a good strategy that resonates with the consumer these days.

Chad's Feedback
Great answer! It will be evident to the interviewer that you have taken the time to research Aldi in preparation for the interview, as you have identified numerous ways their stores are unique compared to other food markets. I recommend rewording your opening line, to avoid the suggestion that the high quality of Aldi's food is unexpected. Consider replacing the word "surprising" with "amazing" or "excellent".
