You must research Airbnb and its most vigorous competitors before your interview. What does Airbnb do best, and who is trying to do it better? Speak openly with the interviewer about your ability to work competitively and how you plan to contribute to their continued success.

"I think the best way to stay ahead of competitors is to keep your offering as simple as possible while remaining innovative and paying attention to the fine details. When you have a great service, others will try to mimic your work, but they will cut corners because they will feel rushed to get it out on the marketplace first. Lately, I've seen your competitors overcomplicating their products. People want simple, easy-to-use services, which they can understand and access easily."

"There are a lot of competitors out there, but so many of them don't have the spirit, level of commitment, or accessibility to assistance and service as Airbnb. For example, Barsala, a recent competitor in Seattle as of 2016, offers more hotel-like accommodations, like staying in a home staged by the companies that stage homes that are up for sale. But getting in contact with someone when you run into an issue is more difficult. Their pricing and customer service feel more corporate, like dealing with investors who don't care about anything but making money. Airbnb makes you feel cared for, and some simple checks and balances ensure you get what you expect. From being able to rate your experience or reach out to the homeowners to being taken care of by Airbnb as a host if you run into any issues with guests, you feel connected and cared for. This is where I believe Airbnb stands apart from the herd."

As a Senior Staff Enterprise Security Engineer, I would contribute to Airbnb's competitive edge through continuous innovation in security practices. I would proactively monitor evolving cybersecurity threats and trends, and design strategies to counter them, reflecting the 'Embrace the Adventure' value. By instilling a strong security culture, aligned with the 'Be a Host' principle, I would help safeguard Airbnb's reputation as a trusted platform. Additionally, I would leverage cutting-edge technologies and security best practices to keep Airbnb's systems secure and efficient. I also believe in the importance of 'Championing the Mission,' and I would advocate for security awareness amongst hosts and guests, contributing to an overall safer and more trustworthy platform, thus helping Airbnb stay ahead in the competitive landscape.
