At Toyota, creating a great first impression is important, which is why we require a uniform and enforce appearance standards, tell me about your previous position, and any uniform they might have provided.
The interviewer is attempting to determine if there might be an issue preventing your employment, such as tattoos, or facial piercings. Most dealerships require their sales staff to wear polos, or shirts and ties. This is an opportunity to talk with the hiring manager about anything that you might have concerns over and to get them out in the open.
"In my last position, the company had us wear a colored polo shirt and khaki slacks. They also provided laundry services for the uniform. I have no issue wearing a uniform, and actually like not having to choose my own wardrobe. I would be interested in hearing about what your appearance standards might be if you wished to share them with me."
