Have you progressed in your career as expected?
The occasional setback or detour is to be expected in your career, and one's career progression is rarely linear. As Elon Musk states, failure is an option at SpaceX. Talk to the interviewer about your career progression, what you learned from your setbacks, and how those lessons helped you move forward. Explain what you would like to see for yourself in the future and how your positive attitude has informed your determination to persevere.
"Overall, my career has progressed slower than I would have liked. I have held a few positions that didn't offer the growth and learning I was expecting; however, I have bounced back nicely. This particular position would take my career exactly where it should be."
"Yes, I am happy with my career progression. I have always been the type to set out a detailed plan for myself and take the required action steps to get there. This position is most definitely in line with my expected career progression."
"I did not have a set expectation from my career early on, but it has progressed. I have moved from junior engineer to senior engineer and even into management positions. I have learned that I enjoy engineering more than management and have focused my aspirations on progressing to the highest level of engineering I can."
"I have progressed in my career far quicker than I had expected. Within 2 years of being done with school, I found many other engineers coming to me as a subject matter expert and I had not expected that prior to finishing my bachelors."
