Tell us about a time you had to explain something complex to someone.
The interviewers are gauging how comfortably you communicate with others. Your answer will help them assess how developed your communication skills are. The more comfortable you are, the more confident you'll come across. They're also trying to ascertain what talents or perspectives you have, if any, on the example you provide. It should seem like second nature in how you communicate it.
"I'd detected a discrepancy. The trail I had to follow, which led me to its source, was quite complicated. When I tried to explain what I was doing to a coworker, it led to further confusion. So I created a report with diagrams, writing it out in a cohesive manner that effectively answered all their questions in order. I don't always resort to written communication, but in this instance, I decided it was prudent."
Everyone has their own style of communication; feel free to share yours. However, emphasize your communication skill level rather than your style. Key points to touch on are your non-defensive communication skills, being an active listener, and your ability to mirror, validate and empathize. Extra points if you can adapt your communication style to others, especially where others are less skilled and less adaptable.
Remember, the AI of the assessment vendor will be screening you for how well you communicate. Pay close attention to your choice of words and what they might indicate. Enunciate and try not to stutter or take long pauses. Record your voice while answering some of these questions. Take note of your use of any speech crutch words such as "like," "um," "you know," "so on and so forth," "and," "well," "but," "so," "ah," "er," and "Etcetera." Practice answering these questions without relying on those words. That will present you as a clearer communicator and more of a professional.
