We have a robust mental health program at Cedars-Sinai and are working as an organization to eliminate the stigma around mental health. It is no secret that health care workers have stressful jobs. How do you cope with the stress our roles can cause?

"Taking care of very sick patients can be stressful. I like to run; running helps my mind work out the day's issues. I also make sure I go to bed early and at the same time each night. If I can't take care of myself, I'm not going to do a great job taking care of others, so I try to be regimented when it comes to self-care."

"This is a great question. We've all had tough cases where a patient dies, or we must give somebody a tough diagnosis. It's professional to take a few minutes after an encounter and let those emotions come and go. We also have a support group for caregivers, a safe space to talk through some tough situations so we can start healing. I find these resources very helpful, and I am grateful my hospital provides them. I am also sure to take care of myself by exercising, eating a well-balanced diet, and making sure I do not take my work home with me."

Describe what you do to manage the stress from your job, both at work and in your personal life. When healthcare professionals know how to debrief and decompress, they are better able to handle the job stressors and are less likely to become sick or injured from stress.
