As a Pharmacist at CVS Pharmacy, one of your many jobs is to track patient compliance and usage of medication and maintain communication with prescribing physicians. Your interviewer knows that Pharmacists play an important role in the identification of substance abuse, and they want to hear that you would take a standardized and proper approach that follows CVS Pharmacy policy if you suspect improper drug usage.

"As a Pharmacist, the first step is identifying a problem. I know to look for red flags like varying providers writing the prescriptions, early fill requests, and paying solely in cash. If I have questions, I will phone physicians to verify patient diagnoses to ensure the patient is using their medications correctly. Keeping the physician informed of the patient's usage is one of the ways that I monitor medication usage."

Tell the interviewer that you would make time to do the research to track the patient's usage over the last year to determine if there was a trend of abuse. Then describe how you would work with the prescribing physician to inform them of the situation so they could take action on their end and discontinue dispensing on yours. This question also allows your interviewer to discuss CVS Pharmacy's policies, so don't hesitate to ask your interviewer.
