Do you have experience managing departmental budgets?
As a fundraising manager, you will certainly be responsible for managing your fundraising budget, which includes staff compensation, special events, donor engagement, database management, professional development, and more. Provide the interviewer with budgetary details from your experience and how you spent that money.
Highlight specific and unique ways that your budget management yielded benefits for your department and/or organization. The interviewer wants to know that you can not only stay within budget but can also maximize the funding you are given to the greatest effect.
"Yes, I do. I used to manage the volunteer services department, and we had a modest budget of 15,000 annually to help with purchasing supplies needed to volunteer events, communications, and daily activities. In my planning, I budgeted the greatest expenses for special events, since these tended to attract the most volunteer support and overwhelmingly contributed to new volunteer recruitment and current volunteer retention. We used this money to purchase food, beverages, shirts, and other items to thank volunteers for their participation and to encourage them to return in the future. These items, emblazoned with our organization's logo, also helped to advertise our work in the community."
