However, they are not trained in spotting the legal obstacles the business will encounter when implementing these ideas. A general counsel needs to be confident enough to speak up against moving forward when it's in the best interest of the company.

Provide an answer that shows you understand that your priority is to protect the company but that you also do not want to hinder the growth and development of its business lines. Explain how you would mitigate negative outcomes if the team decides to move forward against your advice.

"In previous roles, I've had to counsel clients on a variety of outcomes. Sometimes, there are obvious legal issues with a course of action a client wants to take. If I think the client will push back and want to move forward, I make sure that we have a plan in place to mitigate the potential damage. It's not easy to be the person saying no, but it is part of the job, and I am comfortable helping people better understand the potential outcomes of their plan."
