Have you ever been overloaded with work?

In an assistant general counsel position, your scope of work will be broader than the projects assigned to you at a law firm. You may have more meetings, and if you are overseeing other employees, you may have additional coaching and professional development work to do. The interviewer wants to know that you are prepared for a role that may be different from your current arrangement.

Be honest in your answer, but if you say yes, take the time to clarify if the problem was the amount of work being assigned to you or a time management issue on your part. Share the important lessons you have learned and how you keep your workload manageable.

"At my firm, we have a lot of tax clients. During tax season, the attorneys are very busy and put in much longer hours than at other times of the year. Thankfully, we have understanding partners who communicate well. They encourage us to talk to them if we feel overwhelmed. Sometimes, it is helpful to get their perspective on how to tackle the workload since they have experience. Aside from that season, I feel that my work has been manageable."
