Every manager has a different approach to giving feedback. Some prefer to save it for the performance review while others dish it out on the regular. Your response to feedback is much more important than the input itself. Even if it was negative, if you can take it as constructive criticism, you can improve yourself and your skills.

"Every performance review, in my previous position, was very positive. I like to achieve greatness in everything that I do, and my manager appreciated that. Growth opportunities I was presented with came with that understanding. For example, my manager told me that I was spending too much time on the details of a project. They realized that I could be a perfectionist, and really strive to go above and beyond in my work, but challenged me to work on managing my time, and rather than hyper-focusing on things that are lower priority, I should check in more often and step up where I am needed and work on the bigger picture. Great advice and feedback, and I have improved significantly since it was offered."

Ensure that your response conveys a genuine and heartfelt tone. Emphasize the positives and highlight the team's overall benefit from the outcome. Provide an unbiased account of the situation, demonstrating emotional maturity. Ensure you are relaxed and comfortable, and detach yourself from the emotions you experienced before. Embrace the emotional state you want to convey. If you are unable to separate yourself emotionally from the example and observe it objectively, think of an alternate one.
