System and software upgrades are a standard part of an IT engineer's job description. Determining the frequency of these upgrades is critical to keep the information technology systems running at peak performance while minimizing the costs associated with system upgrades. The Cisco interviewer will expect you to know this and describe the system you use to determine when hardware and software need to be upgraded and the most efficient way to accomplish this.

"Managing system and software upgrades is one of the more challenging aspects of my job as an IT engineer. While I would love to have the latest and greatest versions of the systems and software applications I manage, I recognize that this is not cost-effective. Additionally, the upgrade process itself impacts the availability of the systems and can reduce the productivity of the business users. Therefore, I maintain a detailed calendar of required system and software upgrades that I strictly adhere to. These vary depending on the lifecycle of the equipment and programs, the evolution of technology, and the users' needs. Some of the systems I manage have never been upgraded because doing so would not improve their performance or stability. Others, such as storage devices, are upgraded more frequently due to the availability of higher-performing systems with more capacity at a lower cost."
