The interviewer will ask this question for several reasons. The first is to confirm that you are familiar with C and its use in the video game development market. They also want to understand your knowledge of this programming language and its advantages when developing video games. Finally, they may actually expect you to offer an alternative to C as a video game development language.

Be careful how you answer this question. If you agree that C is the preferred language used to develop video games, you can simply state some of the advantages it offers. However, if you feel other languages are more suited for this task, you can confirm that C is popular but then offer alternatives the company should consider. Be careful with this second strategy. Interviewers are often wary of candidates who make suggestions for improvements to the organization's processes and procedures before starting the job and learning more about how the company operates.

"I do believe C is the preferred language for video game development. Some of the reasons behind this are the history of C and how comfortable game developers have become using it. Another advantage this language offers is that several different software development kits, or SDKs, are available for C. This makes the developer's tasks much easier and reduces the time required to develop a game. Finally, C provides developers much more control over the code than some other languages such as C or Java."
