IT engineers are not expected to program or create software. However, it is a definite benefit if you can do this. You should at least have some familiarity with popular programming languages and be able to discuss their benefits and applications. Interviewers will ask you about this to determine your knowledge of software development languages and confirm that you will collaborate with their development team to ensure the software will function well within the IT infrastructure you will help manage.
