This is a basic question asked to ensure your knowledge base is consistent with the needs of the position. The interviewer wants to make sure you are well-versed in different types of marketing. This is important because the role you're interviewing for is specific to content marketing, not product marketing, so you need to be able to clearly explain how they differ.
"The biggest difference between content and product marketing is, of course, the content itself. While product marketing is product or service-focused and encourages purchases, content marketing aims to deliver helpful, relevant, and/or entertaining content to consumers without directly suggesting they make a purchase. The underlying purpose of content marketing is to build brand loyalty and trust."
If you're applying for content marketing jobs, you should be confident in your understanding of what content marketing entails. At its core, content marketing differs from product marketing because its goal is to build brand loyalty and earn consumers' trust--not sell products. Of course, any type of marketing is ultimately aimed at increasing sales, but content marketing does this indirectly.
