"A truly successful mentoring relationship is unique and fully customized to the needs of the mentor and the mentee. However, there are a few attributes that are common in the successful scenarios I have been a part of.
First, there should be a purpose to the relationship. It is important for both parties to know what it is they aim to achieve. While there is value in learning as a mentee, there is an equal learning opportunity as a mentor. Both roles are in mutual service to each other.
Second, there needs to be honesty and vulnerability. Mentors can offer more as a coach when their mentees expose their strengths and weaknesses properly. Likewise, mentors that are willing to share their failures alongside their successes have the opportunity to create richer learning experiences.
Finally, both parties need to be willing to observe, reflect, and provide honest feedback. Direct and open communication is critical, and the mentor and mentee should each be willing to change in order to grow in a valuable way."
