The interviewer wants to know how tuned-in you are. To anticipate trends and be a competitor in an ever-changing field, you have to be up to date on the latest news. There are a lot of "thought leaders" out there. Showing that you are interested in emerging trends tells the interviewer that you take the position, and your career, seriously.

Discuss an interesting marketing breakthrough you've heard about on podcasts you've listened to, seminars you've recently attended, blogs you read, and anything else you've seen that informs your opinion. Aim to be thought-provoking, and share how your marketing approach incorporates the latest marketing breakthroughs. Avoid vague answers, generalizations, and outdated news.

"We're in the middle of a major shift in consumer behavior. More and more purchases are happening online, and the job market is going remote. People are balancing the demands of their personal and work life in new ways. As a result, they're time-poor. They're looking for the most seamless and fastest shopping experience. We already understand how it works. Now we need to adapt the old to the new. Like Steve Jobs said, you've got to start with the customer experience and work back toward the technology, not the other way around."
