Being a strong communicator is an essential skill to master. The interviewer wants you to rate your communication skills to determine if you are a qualified candidate for their organization. Maybe you have taken courses in communication and writing or leadership. If so, be sure to include that in your response. Tell the interviewer how you rate your communication abilities and support your answer with a brief example or story.

"I rate my communication skills as a 9 out of 10 as I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as clear as I would like to be. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills. Because I am an open leader, my team will let me know if I need to clarify anything."

As I've gotten more public service experience, I feel like my communication skills keep improving in both nonverbal and verbal situations. I have dealt with patrons that don't speak English, and I have asked somebody else to translate or have them draw it out.

Rachelle's Feedback
If you are bilingual, this is a great time to mention your linguistic skills.
"As I gain further public service experience, my communication skills improve both verbally and non-verbally. I often communicate with people who do not speak English through drawings, hand gestures, or the use of a translator."

I would give my communication skills an 8. That's the best way to understand where someone is at mentally is with communication. I'm a person who cares a lot about how others feel and communicating with them is an important way to find that out.

Rachelle's Feedback
The second sentence doesn't seem to fit so I have offered a different suggestion, below. Be sure to have an example ready, if the interviewer asks for one.
"I would give my communication skills an 8. I am an open communicator, which stems from my care of others. Currently, I work in construction, so it's important that I communicate with my team and supervisor regularly so that the work is done on time, with safety being top of mind."

I would rate my communication skill as 8/10, I am a strong communicator, and I always double-check with my coworker to make sure that we are on the same pace. I am an active person when communication involved; I want to make sure that I will not mess other people up and also myself, which later requires more time to fix.

Rachelle's Feedback
You make a great point that a lack of communication can cause a lot of trouble and wasted time! You support your rating very well.
