"I'd start by making sure the product they were describing was the product that was discontinued. Then I'd call some other stores to see if they had any left in stock. Then, I would relate with them, sharing their disappointment that the product was discontinued, and then I'd try to turn them onto a comparable product, preferably one of our name brands. If our return policy allowed it, I'd assure them they could bring it back if they didn't like it. Hopefully, my enthusiasm would open their mind to something new and keep them coming back for more. In the end, I'd do everything I could to make sure the note they left on was a positive one."
