"We brought on a new supervisor, and they were struggling right out of the gate. My manager tasked me with mentoring them. When I went to train them on closing out the books at the end of the night, they insisted they do it their way and that they had a system. I looked at their system and didn't see much rhyme or reason for it. I suggested another way of going about it, but they were rigid. I let them do it their way; it took them a long time, and there was a lot of frustration on their part. So I said tomorrow, I'll close out the books and wanted them to witness how quickly it took me. Then I challenged them to increase their time by the end of the week, and if they didn't, they'd have to be open to trying it my way. They agreed. Before the end of the week, they said they wanted to learn how I went about it. So I started showing them how to do it and why. They needed to understand the stakes. Then, once they got better at it, they started to add on some of their systems, and next thing I knew, they were the rising star of the store."
