Many hiring managers choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness, all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community through volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

In 2020 when Covid-19 began to affect the education system, many students and teachers were overwhelmed, which is why I felt the need to become a mentor/tutor with an organisation called Ikamva Youth Centre. It is a huge NGO with many branches all over South Africa. I worked with the North West branch to assist high school students in preparing for their English Home Language preliminary exams. It was a stressful time for everyone, and I just wanted to do everything I could to lighten some of that load for both the teachers and the students.
