This question is another way for the TSA to ask, 'Why do you want this job?' Take some time to consider how your best skills and characteristics align with the Transportation Security Administration. Think about how their mission excites you and aligns with your career goals.
This question presents an excellent opportunity to let the interviewer know you are passionate about this career opportunity. It's a good idea to approach this query like you would a sales pitch or credibility statement.

"The core values of the TSA include Integrity, Respect, and Commitment. I was raised with these precise values and put them into practice every day. I will show my commitment by applying my keen observational skills and ability to think and react quickly under pressure. I consider myself an observant and watchful person who will be of service when detecting and preventing outside threats. I am respectful and learned a great deal about showing due respect while serving in the Navy. I have a proven history of stepping up to protect our nation and serve my country. I am dedicated and trustworthy, and I also see integrity as the cornerstone of every action I take and each decision I make. It would be an honor to be of service to serve my country in this critical role with the TSA."

"This is absolutely in line with my career goals. When I was a kid, I was watching TV when the 911 attacks unfolded. This had a profound impact on me. I watched the heroes of that day rushing into danger to do the right thing. After that, I wanted to be a TSO to keep America safe. So this mission is in line with mine."

I remember being glued to the TV after the attacks on 9/11, I never want to see something like that happen again. I can't imagine flying today without knowing each person has gone thru a screening process to make sure nothing like that happens again.

Kevin's Feedback
Great answer! I've reworded you answer slightly slightly for clarity. See below.
After the 9/11 attacks, I realized the importance of airport security. I remember being glued to the TV, watching the aftermath of the attacks, thinking to myself that I never want to see this happen again. I can't imagine flying today without knowing each person boarding a plane has gone through a thorough screening process and everyone flying is safe.

What motivates me is knowing that with the training and techniques provided by the TSA. I can provide the safety and freedom of movement for those flying.

Rachelle's Feedback
This is a great motivator! Well said :)

I think watching the 9/11 event unfold and wanting to contribute to the public's safety while traveling.

Rachelle's Feedback
This is a significant motivator and a very important one. Can you paint a story for the interviewer, ensuring that your passion really shines through?

Marcie's Feedback
Lol. Sure :) Consider answering this question in a similar way to how you answered other questions about the TSA's mission and how you're drawn to the idea of helping keep people safe while they travel. You might talk about how moving from food services to the TSA is a jump you want to make because you want to increase your ability to help others and you know that in the TSA screener position you will help keep hundreds of people safe every day. As you move up in your career, you want to protect the freedoms and safety of others, while also personally continuing to grow in responsibility by taking on more management and training duties.

I feel very motivated to carry out the TSA's mission to protect the US's transportation systems and ensure freedom of movement for its people and commerce because it has always been a dream of mine to work in a job that will allow me to serve others. A career with the TSA is a great fit for me because it will allow me to do just that while also ensuring the security of my community and country. I really look forward to this amazing opportunity to jump-start my career with the TSA.
Marcie's Feedback
It's great that you have the desire to serve others. Can you talk more about why you want to protect your country and its citizens? Where does this drive come from (your dad?) Have you ever worked in any other jobs where you protected others and enjoyed it?
Prepare for behavioral scenarios and security questions that TSA interviewers prioritize.
