Hiring managers know that creating an efficient software development project requires careful planning. This is known as the software development process design and evolution process and is an integrated part of the development of a program. Interviewers will ask you about this to determine if you have developed and used a process for laying out the steps required to develop a piece of software. They are also interested in whether your process aligns with the one used by their current software development organization.

"I go through a lengthy planning process before initiating any software development project. This begins with a feasibility study to determine if the product we are targeting can be developed and will meet the needs of the internal or external customer. My team and I then determine the resources required, the programming language we will use, and which team member will be designated to develop each specific part of the code. We also identify the quality control and tracking process to be used. My experience tells me that doing this may take time, but it always results in a better managed and more efficient software development process."
