Rehabilitation counselors must have excellent communication skills since they work with patients who may have cognitive, physical, social, or emotional disabilities. Rehabilitation counselors must explain ideas and concepts in a straightforward manner so that a patient can easily understand them. The interviewer wants to see that you have the skills they are looking for.

"I would describe my verbal and written communication skills as excellent. I understand that many of my patients have a disability that might make it hard to comprehend what is being said. When working with my patients, I like to take complex information and explain it in simpler terms. I then ask my patient to repeat what I have told them to make sure they understand what I am saying."
