Principal product managers are expected to have strong data-driven analysis skills. Product development strategies are often supported by metrics and other data backed analysis methods. Interviewers ask this question to determine if a candidate has the technical skills and experience necessary to perform this important aspect of the principal product manager role.
Remember to include experience using business intelligence software in addition to your experience writing queries. Candidates who have well rounded analytical skills in this area are valued.
