Why are you looking to work in M&A?
There are various specialties within the practice of law and as a new associate, you can choose any one of them. Explain what draws you to M&A. Maybe you like the research and document review, contract negotiations, or supporting businesses as they grow. Perhaps you have a connection with the partners at this firm, and they work in M&A. Overall, your interviewer wants to know that you have more motivation or interest in the position than just getting a job.
"I have always been fascinated with business organization and growth. I believe that working in M&A would give me a unique position to counsel business owners and help them grow their business and meet their goals. Although I do not have specific experience in facilitating a transaction, I believe I would enjoy the preparation stages of research and due diligence. However, I may find out that I enjoy negotiations and finalizing transactions once I see that process play out.
