In my years of working closely with hiring managers, I've learned that they always try to gauge a candidate's ability to handle the toughest situations in the job they are hiring for. At the USPS, there are highs and lows to the logistics of delivering the mail. This can be driven by high-volume holidays and seasons. If you are fortunate to earn an interview, your interviewer will surely want to hear how you navigate stressful and pressure-packed work.

"Yes, I am quite resilient to stress and pressure on the job. I have learned how to deal with everyday stress and the pressure of a fast-paced environment throughout my career. When I was working in a busy restaurant, I dealt with a wide variety of personalities. One night we were slammed, and I had just worked two double shifts in a row, but I managed to resolve a customer complaint about the steak and keep a positive attitude the whole night! This experience in the food industry has prepared me well for any customer interaction I would have here at the USPS."

Your interviewer is most interested in hearing a specific example to help them better understand your ability to deal with pressure on the job. Describe the situation that shows you can stay calm in the most stressful situations. If you haven't experienced intense work environments, think about the last time you were preparing for a test that made you nervous or something along those lines.

"As you can see from my resume, I've worked the last two years in production at a large factory, and we experienced our fast-paced and slower times. During times of heavy production, it took a full team effort to make things happen. I was first in line to sign up for overtime and knew when to buckle down and work more diligently in my tasks."

Yes, I am quite accustomed to pressure. When I was working on a railroad, there was a crossing we had to block traffic on; we had to move an average of 5 to 6 empty railcars and replace them with adequate railcars. We switched cars in a span of 20 minutes on a busy road, with traffic backed a quarter mile. We had to move these cars within a 30 minute time frame with teamwork and communication. We never went past 20 minutes.
