Expanded access is the term used to describe how manufacturers make new drugs that are being reviewed and available under certain circumstances to treat a patient(s) with a serious disease or condition who cannot participate in a controlled clinical trial. Expanded access or 'compassion use' is a term used to describe a situation where a potential participant has little to no other treatment options available for a particular indication. The investigational product may be this participant's closest option to treatment and therefore should be open-label and pose no additional risk than had the participant not participated at all.
