"I interpret default to trust as a behavior model where individuals assume the best intentions of each other in all situations. This includes trusting in others to follow through on their commitments and showing them grace when they do not. It includes assuming positive intentions in the face of conflict. It includes demonstrating authentic and direct communication alongside active listening.

For example, one of the people on a team I was responsible for at my last company fell into a pattern of not being able to deliver his work assignments on time. His lack of timely delivery was affecting the team in a number of negative ways. It was my responsibility to discuss the issue with him and determine a way forward. I used the default to trust approach when I spoke with him.

I was authentic with him about the issue and its impact on the team. I communicated that I knew he had the skills and experience to deliver, and I asked him if he could explain what was going on. He opened up and shared the details of a very sad personal situation he was going through. I let him know I appreciated him trusting me with those details and asked him how we could support him during this difficult time. We were able to adjust his assignments to allow him to work on less stressful tasks while the situation played out. He really appreciated the support from the team and thanked everyone for keeping faith in him and supporting him while he worked to get back to where he wanted to be."
