"I would start by explaining that the blockchain is a tool that is used to make sure trades are handled properly and fairly. I would then ask them to imagine that we were going to trade something they are familiar with like Pokemon cards. I would explain that the blockchain represents the process of making sure the Pokemon cards are real and not fake. I would then explain that the blockchain helps us to know who owns each card and when they traded it.
I would explain that the information we keep in the blockchain is ordered based on the date and time each trade happened. We can clearly see which card was traded first, next, and so on all the way to the latest trade. I would state that many people have a copy of the list in case we ever lose it or disagree about who owns a card.
Finally, I would compare the card trading metaphor I used to cryptocurrency trading. I would explain that cryptocurrency is a type of money, and the blockchain helps us to trade it in a safe and fair way."
