If you step back and look at your career, you've likely worked for organizations on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to transparency in business reporting. Some organizations, starting from the top level, are very secretive with financial information and employee news. Other organizations, like Boston Scientific, are open and honest with employees and the general public on financial matters and employee news. Talk about your experiences working for organizations regarding their transparency and be sure to point out why you feel working for a transparent organization like Boston Scientific is important.

"Since graduating from college, I've been conducting research for a government entity where things are very transparent to both employees and the public at large. I truly appreciate transparency about finances, future growth, and employment matters because I know that employees working the front lines are difference-makers in these matters. As a researcher, knowing about public funding and grants impacts future work that I do and it helps me and my department in planning the further out we go. I would never want to work for an organization that is archaic in their philosophy regarding this and I was glad to hear from fellow researchers here that the organization prioritizes their openness."

"As I researched this position with Boston Scientific, I was very relieved to read the company's stance on transparency with their staff, stakeholders, and customers. I have experience working for an organization that didn't believe in transparency with the staff and this greatly impacted my ability to succeed as a Sales Representative for the organization. During my first year with that organization, I built a solid customer base around a line of products that the organization was going to end up parting ways with the manufacturer of those products. Unbeknownst to me, I'd have to do a lot of work to maintain those customers with a new manufacturer we ended up distributing for and the losses I saw were pretty immense. As my sales manager and I discussed nearing the end of that product line, the plan had been in the works for almost a year and I never knew about it. I really learned a lesson about transparency and would absolutely love that aspect of working for Boston Scientific."

I worked for a restaurant before where things weren't transparent, nobody knew how many hours they were going to get or how the business was doing. People started leaving the job and this caused the Restaurant to be badly organized, always looking for new staff and being understaffed the restaurant is now closed.

Stephanie's Feedback
As tempting as it may be, I suggest that you avoid bad-mouthing a previous employer during an interview, even if those critiques are warranted and you don't specifically name the employer. Instead, focus on the question itself and why Boston Scientific's commitment to transparent communication aligns with your own values.

I was so glad to learn that Boston Scientific values transparency with its employees and clientele. I believe it is a necessity for successful communication both internally and with the public. While conducting usability research with a financial aid website, they made it clear to my team that they were trying to improve a specific section of their site to better cater to a target audience while at the same time updating to Drupal 9. Conducting both these projects at the same time could have been messy, but because they were transparent about their intentions to update, we were able to report on our findings in a way that would translate to the new system model and specifically target the sections and audience they were trying to reach.
