In Boston Scientific's mantra of providing solutions that matter most, they believe that it takes heart to develop solutions that matter to their customers and this is achieved through determination. For this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you are dedicated and determined to help your customers find solutions that matter by having you give an example of a time you demonstrated this in the past. In your example, be sure to be specific and detailed about how you displayed your dedication to a customer. Talk about how you feel it is important to meet the needs of the customer in any way possible and show that you are willing to do that in creative and unique ways with your customers.

"As you can see from my resume, I have many years of experience as a technical writer. While most of the time my main customers are the internal designers and production teams of our products, I do have a unique experience where I worked closely with an external customer to meet their needs. I was writing for an organization that manufactured tools and my technical writing was really towards the how-to assemble and how-to-use manuals. I was approached by my director regarding a customer overseas on one line of products and the customer was requesting a more detailed section of the manual on a how-to section of a new drill we were distributing. I was more than willing to contact the customer to find out what in particular they needed so I could customize the section to meet their needs. This was an unusual concession we made because this was a very high-volume customer. After calling, I learned that end users of the drill would be working specifically with steel. I worked up a draft of the new section, got it approved by our internal team, and then communicated it with the customer. They had a couple of revision requests and in the end, I wrote a new section that the customer was very happy with. In the end, my extra effort turned out to be a win-win for my organization and the customer and I'm happy I went above and beyond to help them."

"A couple of years ago, my company was working on contracting with one of the largest ATV manufacturers in the world on new air filter designs. Knowing that our yearly sales would see a huge increase if we landed the contract, I volunteered to represent the organization from the engineering design side. First, I contacted the customer directly to arrange an on-site visit to their final assembly plan, and in turn, I scheduled their design engineer a visit to our operations. After meeting with their team to learn about their product and what they needed from us, I had a week to prepare for their visit onsite to our plant. In that week, I developed a few prototypes for them and worked with my production leads on promoting a facility tour when they arrived. Upon their visit, the customers were thoroughly impressed by our operations and our ability to deliver on their needs. After returning back to their plant and testing our prototypes, a contract was signed and we were up and running on their line of products within months."

When I worked as a chef we had a usual customer that came in once or twice a week. She was an old lady that came in for a salmon dinner which she always usually gets. She mentioned to a waitress that it was her 75th birthday. I said this to the head chef as we had a nice carrot cake that was not used and was going to be thrown out as it's used by date was going to be over by the next two days. We put a few candles in it and sent them out to her. We also gave her the dinner for free.

Stephanie's Feedback
While this is a great example of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer, I suggest leaving out details about the customer's age and the reference to her being an "old lady" as this could potentially rub your interviewers the wrong way.

In the installation department, I always try to adapt to the client's needs. One client, in particular, was tight on us starting the installation on a date that we already had booked. He wanted constant supervision of the project and a couple of other favors such as moving the plants around and rearranging a fence so that his turtles would not escape. At the end of the day, I was able to satisfy all of his requests and I even had to deliver the project on a holiday because it was the only time the client had available.

Wow! It sounds like you really went above and beyond to help this customer. Perhaps talk a bit more about how exactly you managed to satisfy all of his requests. The more details, the better!

I was hired by a veterinary graduate student to copyedit their master's thesis on equine heart surgery. I don't have any experience in veterinary medicine and made it clear this would be a learning experience for me. I took extra time to conduct extensive research throughout the editing process and I planned my schedule to return the edited document and author notes in a timely manner. After returning, they still had some questions and concerns. I made sure to keep myself available to them throughout the process to clarify points and give feedback on changes. After they graduated, they told me they had received high marks on the paper. I was so happy to hear that both of our hard work had paid off, and I was proud to have gone the extra mile to provide the best experience possible despite my lack of experience. Ultimately, I believe in being proud of your work, and when it comes to customers, that means going above and beyond to create the best and most beneficial experience possible.
