"Within the Oracle RAC environment, VIP refers to the alternate Virtual IP address assigned to each node in a cluster. The function of this is that if a node were to fail, the VIP of the failed node would move to one of the surviving nodes. It will then signal that the node has gone down and relay its new location to the application. If VIP is not available, the application will continue to wait for a TCP timeout only to discover that the session is no longer live due to the failure."
