While many facilities have a designated scheduler to ensure the units are staffed and backup staff is on call, there may still be occasions where it's not possible to fill a hole in the schedule. When that occurs, you may be asked to cover the floor to provide patient care or to help pass medications. Be open and honest in your answer about what you're willing to cover.

"Ensuring our residents are cared for is my top priority, so I would be willing to work the floor and cover the med cart if necessary. This happens from time to time in my current role, and I work the floor two to three days a month. I have no problem jumping in to help, whether answering call lights, passing medications, or assisting with charting."

"Scheduling can be difficult sometimes, and though we have a PRN pool to call when we have callouts, sometimes it's just not possible to fill the shift. If this happens, I'm happy to help support the staff and cover the floor and med cart duties as needed. I lead by example and never ask my staff to do anything I'm not willing to do."
I am willing to work the floor if necessary. I have spent many years in management, and I am used to having to jump in and take a cart when there is a call in. I actually miss working the floor sometimes and it helps keep my skills up to date as well. It also gives me firsthand experience to the flow of the unit and how things are running. I can use the floor experiences to help me improve the unit.
