"I am a direct communicator, and I find this to be effective when setting expectations and providing detailed instructions to my team. I am proactive in my communication; for example, as soon as I know we will have an admission to the unit, I notify my team so they can prepare instead of waiting until the last minute or, worse, notifying them after the patient has arrived. I actively listen to my team and make sure they know that I take their feedback and concerns seriously. I address issues timely and appropriately with the staff as well."

"As part of the nursing staff, I know there is a lot of information the team has to remember, and it often changes rapidly. I communicate with my team verbally and as a group so I can make sure we're all on the same page and so I can field questions. I also follow up with written communication, documentation, and instructions so the team has something to reference. I am an open and honest communicator, giving updates and explanations as necessary, answering their questions, and addressing their concerns."

For your unit to run optimally, you must be able to communicate with the clinical staff that you are overseeing effectively. Consider how you actively listen to your team and address their feedback and concerns. Since you are the "point person" of the shift, you will likely have the most up-to-date patient information and updates on admissions and discharges before the rest of the staff. Describe how you pass the information to the team to ensure continuity of care and operation.
I communicate with my team using various methods. I am transparent, honest, and concise in my communication with staff. I communicate 1:1 with the staff especially if I see something that needs to be addressed right away or if its isolated to one individual. I communicate with postings on the unit for staff to read. I also communicate with staff at meetings. I make myself available to staff to communicate with me regarding concerns or questions they have. I feel I am an approachable leader and in my experience staff have felt comfortable talking to me.
