"I feel it is critically important for an organization to maintain accurate records for the software it uses. This is important for several reasons. The first is that it provides the information a company needs to track the software it uses, ensure that it is licensed appropriately, have access to the support they need, and easily upgrade or replace it. In my previous companies, we used a variety of systems to make this easy to accomplish. These included its ERP system, the IT organization's databases, spreadsheets, and special products designed to document and track software applications. Implementing any of these systems is far better than having no system."
