While we don't have to agree with someone's choices, as an addiction nurse, I believe it is important to show as much compassion as possible in an effort to encourage the successful recovery of my patients."

Being compassionate and sympathetic are helpful, but we must also maintain a professional manner and be firm with our rationale of why a treatment plan and sobriety are important."
