As an academic dean, you most likely have a bachelor's or master's degree. If the interviewer asks if you have considered obtaining your PhD, you must not have that qualification. If you have not achieved your PhD, discuss with the interviewer if you see value in it for yourself. The interviewer wants to gauge your commitment to continuing education and professional development. It is important to consider your own career goals and aspirations before answering this question. If returning to school aligns with your long-term objectives, it may be worthwhile to explore this option further. Keep in mind that more colleges are requiring their academic deans to hold a doctorate in higher education or a similar field.

"Of course, I would consider returning to complete my PhD. While it has never been a requirement for any of the schools I have worked for. I certainly see value in higher education and think it would also be a great example to our students. Is this a requirement to be considered for the position?"

"Absolutely! I am passionate about continuing education and see great value in obtaining my PhD. In fact, I have been looking into different doctoral programs that will accommodate a full-time career and found a higher education leadership program that will work for me. It's through Grand Canyon University and will allow me to work full-time while working towards my PhD at my own pace."

"Yes, I would certainly entertain that idea. I would, however, like to stay in a full-time dean position while pursuing my PhD. Would that be possible with your university if I were hired for the position?"

I am currently enrolled in an Ed.D. program to enhance my academic leadership skills. Throughout the experience, I have greatly valued the courses on personal leadership, the leadership of others, and the management in diverse populations. I feel this experience will make me a positive fit for the Associate Dean position.

I would, of course, entertain this idea because I love research and value this level of engagement in a topic, but would want to remain as a full-time dean to stay engaged with the College of Marin. Is this an education level you're seeking for this role?

Cindy's Feedback
Good. It's also effective to engage in a discussion about what, ultimately, they are seeking in terms of credentials.

I have completed my Ph.D. in Sociology, however, I would consider upgrading my master's degree in management to an MBA or Ph.D. Absolutely.

Stephanie's Feedback
Since you already have a Ph.D. (which is an incredible academic accomplishment,) I would suggest using this question as an opportunity to pitch that a bit more. What did you learn from your Ph.D. program and how has that supported your work in academia? What are your areas of academic interest? Your openness to continued higher education is commendable, especially since you already have an advanced degree. What benefit would you get from earning a master's in management or an MBA?

I already have a PhD

Chad's Feedback
Excellent! Earning your PhD is an achievement of which you should be very proud. Take this opportunity to provide more information about your education. Where did you earn your PhD? How has the knowledge and skills you gained through your PhD supported your work in academia?
