One of my proudest moments was when I led my 4th-grade team in redesigning our reading program by writing a 30,000 grant for books to use in the implementation of a guided reading program that resulted in an over 30% rise in students' academic achievement that school year.

I had been teaching for about 20 years and felt fairly stale (using project ideas taught to me, remaking the same object over and over). While I had been getting positive student reviews and exhibition opportunities, I knew I needed to change in order to grow. So, I signed up for a workshop with Ruudt Peters in the Netherlands. I worked with a group of international artists in a course called "Now: Breath" where we challenged each other and ourselves in our creative habits. As a result, I completely redid my methodology for teaching in the jewelry studio. I created prompts that were unexpected and designed to disrupt what students normally do. My aim was to get them out of their creative habits. The evaluations were proof that it was successful. One student wrote, "I hated these prompts at first, but now they have changed my whole practice, how I create, and how I think."

As a Dean of the School of Business, my proudest moment was receiving notification from the Accreditation of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) that our program accreditation was reaffirmed. Because of the hard work, discipline, and attention to detail it took to research, write, and published the Self-Study I submitted for their review. As a teacher, it's when my students acquire their "Aha" moments from a period of instruction.

One of my proudest moments was when one of my students came to see me after he had graduated with both his BS and MS to thank me for all my help and for all I had done for him over the years. This student was the smartest, nicest, most independent student for whom I had to do very little. He taught me so much. Similarly, I've had students who struggled every step of the way, and they came back to thank me for my help and encouragement. I think the thank you's from them is even more important. The first student would have been successful no matter what; I think the others are the ones for whom I made a difference. As a leader, I have made some really good staff hires who I think bring creative solutions every day.
