The interviewer would like to know the type of situation in which your leadership skills thrive. Typically, when you have a great relationship with the individuals you are guiding, then your leadership approach will be the most effective.
Tell the interviewer that you recognize how effective leadership begins with clear communication, trust, and honesty. Building a relationship with your team members will ensure that your leadership approach is accepted and absorbed. The more comfortable your team members are with you, the better chance they will follow your leadership approach.

"My leadership skills are the most effective when my relationship with the employee isn't just a surface connection. I want to have true knowledge of their life and a good understanding of their career goals. When my employees feel assured that I can help them to achieve their goals, they are more likely to follow my lead and be an engaged part of the team."

I believe I excel in taking leadership when the group is lacking direction. I take the initiative immediately, even if it isn't my job necessarily. I feel I excel in providing direction in a time of need and do well uniting a group.

Rachelle's Feedback
Very solid response. This is an excellent time to jump in as a leader!

It's most effective if I'm able to build a team and know them individually.

Rachelle's Feedback
Your answer should be more situation based. Are you at your best when the pressure is on? When it's time to mentor or grow a team?
"My leadership skills are most effective when there is pressure to succeed or meet a deadline. I am an excellent encourager and am very well organized. These factors make my leadership skills shine when it's crunch time."
Anonymous Answer
Like everyone else, I need to prove myself with the employees for them to respect and trust me. I need to show them that I am here to help them, support them and teach them, rather than just giving directives.

Rachelle's Feedback
Your approach is very respectful and the interviewer should be impressed with this answer.

Change management is a very important skill that organizations look for in leaders! See below for slight reformatting.

When I have taken the time to cultivate trust with clear and honest communication and made an effort to build the personal relationships within my group.

Kevin's Feedback
Very good! You show that strong leadership skills come from trust and relationships. To really drive this home build upon it a bit more. You want to show your interviewer that you know you stuff. So show it.
I’d say I am an influencer and a transformational leader. I take the time necessary to cultivate trust with clear and honest communication and made an effort to build the personal relationships within my group. I treat everyone equally, working in partnership with my peers, conducting myself with honesty and integrity, and earning their trust by showing I care. I never micromanage, but I do perform regular and predictable check-ins, just to make sure no one needs help or coaching. I want them to know my habits so they don’t feel like I’m spying on them. I may be leading the team, but I am a member of the team, and I make sure they can see me that way.

I can apply my leadership skill best when there is an opportunity to build trust and connection with my team.

Rachelle's Feedback
Good start! Do you have an example of this type of situation in action?
Anonymous Answer
Building rapport and relationships help employees understand me and I understand them. This helps them to feel more comfortable around me and acceptable to follow me as a leader more. If I understand what they want out of the company and what their goals are, I can help them achieve it and they will be satisfied in their work and therefore work harder for me.

Stephanie's Feedback
While rapport and relationship building are excellent skills, I would encourage you to reflect back on the prompt and explicitly use the word "effective" in your response. For example, "My leadership skills are most effective when," or, "When ______ happens, I know that my skill in building rapport has been effective."
Anonymous Answer
When I am able to do some hands learning with my co-workers.
Marcie's Feedback
So, in other words, you like to roll up your sleeves and work with your colleagues, even as you're teaching them something new. This is a great quality for a leader to have, and I'm sure your colleagues appreciate this about you! To make your answer more memorable to the interviewer, explain why hands-on learning/training is the most effective way for you to lead. Does it give better results than just lecturing your colleagues during a meeting? Explain this to the interviewer.
