I see from your resume that you have some gaps in your work history. Would you mind elaborating on them?

Having gaps on a resume is not the end of the world and is legitimate if there is a valid reason. The interviewer is asking this question to ensure that there isn't some other reason why, trouble with the law, etc. Reassure the interviewer of the reasons for the gaps, and accentuate the positive benefits of the time you were away from work.

"I had a gap while I was out for maternity leave in the later part of 2015, and there is a gap in 2011 for about six months while I cared for my father who died of cancer shortly after he started chemo."

"Due to the pandemic, I was laid off in 2020 and had trouble finding employment. So, I used the eight months or so to better myself. I took a class, began work on an MBA, and even learned a new language. As I look back, I believe that it was time well-spent."
