Why did you leave your last job?

Focus on being direct and honest, and explain why you left your last place of employment. If you gave notice, were furloughed, or fired, describe the circumstances behind your leaving. Be sure to end your response on a positive note and tell the interviewer how you are excited to have the opportunity to interview for the position with their company.

Avoid saying anything negative about your previous employer, supervisor, customers, or coworkers. When you speak poorly of others, it shows the interviewer that you may be a challenging person to work with and talk about others behind their backs.

"I left my last job after working there for twelve years because the company was understaffed. The CEO did not want to hire additional employees, so I worked sixteen-hour days, six days a week. I do not mind working long hours on occasion, but this went on for two years, and I was missing so much in my kids' lives. I realized it was time for a change, so I applied to your agency because of your reputation and a more stable schedule."
