How do you handle difficult witnesses?

Focus on outlining a few techniques you employ when working with difficult or hostile witnesses. The interviewer wants to hear that you remain calm, actively listen to the witness, explain why you are interviewing them, what you will do with the information you receive, and stay patient and professional throughout.

Avoid saying that you become angry, dismiss the witness, or act in another unprofessional manner. If you cannot remain calm and professional when dealing with difficult witnesses, the interviewer will determine that you may not be cut out for the job.

"I handle difficult witnesses the same way I do as ones who are cooperative. I am always patient and professional. I introduce myself and explain the reason for the investigation. If someone becomes difficult during an interview, I stay calm and reiterate why I am speaking with them. I stay focused and do not take a witness's anger or frustration personally, and remain neutral at all times. I understand that some witnesses will not help an investigation as well as others."
